Starting a home cleaning or janitorial business

Home cleaning and janitorial businesses are a booming industry. There are several methods you can use to start this type of business, and there are quite a few franchises available to assist you for a fee. This section will not only give you ideas for starting different types of cleaning and janitorial businesses, it will also give you tips and advice for getting the business off the ground on the right foot, and operating your business efficiently.

Remember the first step in starting any business is you need customers. Make sure you've got a website that's well optimized for the search engines, and put plenty of fliers and mailers out. The faster your cleaning business grows the less time you'll have to spend cleaning and the more time you'll get to focus on running and growing your business.

Before going to far decide where your focus will be. You can start a house cleaning business, or you can focus on how to start a commercial cleaning business. Each of these has it's own specific problems and opportunities. The biggest difference is in how you market the business. For commercial cleaning business you'll need to target offices using direct mail and then followup with a phone call. For residential cleaning business a simple post card mailing may be quite effective.

Concentrate on your procedures. Before setting your price put pencil to paper and determine how long it's going to take you to clean a room of a certain size. You may want to pick a room in your house, clean the office and the carpet and time yourself. This will give you a good idea of what to charge your home and commercial customers.

Don't get too caught up in how to start a cleaning business. Most of it you can figure out as you go. Work on getting out there and talking to people, getting customers and bringing in the money. You can always adjust your procedures and prices down the road. That doesn't mean you just hang out a shingle and start cleaning. But planning shouldn't be overkill.

A slowing economy is a great time to start.
Many companies will be inclined to outsource janitorial positions to save on benefits and other related costs. When the economy is slowing down you actually broaden your target market. Bigger businesses may be much more inclined to listen to your message, if they see the cost savings in contracting their cleaning outside the company. It is even more important to market to these bigger companies because your home and residential customers may start to drop off as money becomes tighter.
