Starting a fitness business

The fitness business isn't a craze or a fad, it's here to stay. Gyms targeting the average American have been around since the 1970s and fitness food businesses have been around for almost as long. The market for fitness and health related businesses is huge. Some aspects of the business are of a more hands-on bases such as personal fitness training and running a franchise like Curves. Others are much more broad in reach. Things like selling supplements and health foods on a web site.

One of the most popular fitness businesses is personal training. Personal trainers are often well paid and have flexibile schedules. But that flexibility can work with you or against you. When your just starting your business you'll need to adjust your schedule to meet the needs of your clients. As the business grows and you get more clients you'll have to option of being more selective, and thus able to adjust your schedule.

The first question most people want answered when they start a business is how much will I make? The personal training side of the fitness business is very wide open. New trainers often charge as little as $25 per hour, while more established fitness experts can charge upwards of $125 per hour. If you're not desparate for quick money the best approach is to start charging what you intend to charge when the business is successful. If you start too low and get a bunch of clients, it can be difficult raising your rates in the future.

Any business you decide to start should be closely tied to what you most enjoy. If you're an expert on supplements and you really like that aspect of fitness and healthy living, start a health food store or supplments web site. There are dozens of companies you can buy from and resell on your site. This is a pretty competitive field so you'll need to carve out a niche market. For example you could focus on supplements for increasing muscle, or losing weight, instead of broader site.
