Business laws and regulations and getting a
State of Ohio business license

Tort reform enacted in Ohio in 2005 has made the state a little more business friendly and according to The Pacific Research insitute it's number 4 in the country and number 1 in the midwest. But for taxes and according to the Tax Foundation, Ohio ranks very poorly, 49th to be exact. This is a tax climate that is less business friendly than even New York and New Jersey. Recent increases in the Ohio minimum wage have aggravated the climate, and an anti-smoking ordinance may draw the potential restaurant entrepreneur to more friendly confines of some border states like Kentucky.

The unemployment rate is down to 5.1% in Ohio but still slightly higher than the national average. The new minimum wage is $6.85 and is adjusted by the rate of inflation every year. Because of this built in cost increase businesses starting in border areas of Ohio may be wise to consider operating in a border state with a more pro business climate.
